About Alejandro Perez Alejandro
Perez’ photographies have caught my eye: His work is a rather extraordinary
interpretation of nature using women, or perhaps the idea of having found
a similarity between the two. Nature has always presented us with feminine
characteristics. We talk about nature as our mother, even in Quechua,
nature is called “Pacha Mama” – Mother Earth. Maybe some people will say
that this is an obvious interpretation. I think Alejandro`s intentions
are exactly this: to be obvious and then to show his surprise. Nature
has a powerful presence in Norway. It is everywhere, intense and everlasting.
It is because of this, Alejandro makes this comparison. The evident presence
and at the same time the surprise – Nature, the Woman. By playing with
a light that signifies a Nordic country, Alejandro takes skilfully advantage
of this situation, even more when he manages to use naked women to create
landscapes characteristically Scandinavian. This is an early work with
bold indications. In a world full of anxiety, Alejandro takes the side
to that of beauty, even more bold is it when the aesthetic - theory denies
the contrary. Alejandro Perez does this, I think, as a part of his conception
of life. It had been obvious if a Latin American had made perceptions
about his alienation, but in this case it is different: Alejandro shows
an illustration about assimilation – this is where his work differs. The
soft Norwegian mountains cannot be compared to the majestic Andean mountains,
which are forceful, sharp-edged, rigid and not very hospitable. In contrast
the Norwegian mountains are comfortable. The mountains are soft as the
breasts and flesh of a woman. Norway has with its tradition in peace –
work influenced Alejandro’s concept of reality. His reflections and convictions
are different from that of the people from his home country. I will insist
upon that this is a praise to the assimilations in the Norwegian culture,
without forgetting the unexpected. Alejandro is still a man that lets
himself get surprised in every-day life; over a woman`s flesh and the
skin of nature. His works show confrontations in every-day life, and I
believe he succeeds.
